in 1837, workers of this hand-dug lake earned just 35 cents a day and a daily jigger of whiskey, which was thought to help prevent malaria. When the project was completed in 1845, the 13,500-acre Grand Lake was the largest man-made lake in the world. Grand Lake St Marys is one of western Ohio’s most interesting landmarks, starting out as canal reservoir in the 1800s and eventually becoming a popular recreation destination for boating, fishing, and lake life. Today, it still draws visitors looking for a simple escape on the water.
