Hidden Gem in Ohio: Maria Stein Shrine and Retreat Grounds
Some places just have a way of making you slow down the moment you arrive. That is exactly how visiting Maria Stein Shrine of the Holy Relics feels.
Tucked into the quiet countryside of western Ohio, the Shrine is known for housing one of the largest documented Holy Relic collections in the United States. With more than 1,200 relics of the Saints and five relics of the True Cross, it draws visitors from all over Ohio and beyond. But even if you are not visiting for religious reasons, there is something incredibly peaceful about the entire property.
The Shrine sits in the heart of the historic Land of the Cross Tipped Churches, and the atmosphere feels calm, welcoming, and reflective from the minute you walk inside.
Exploring the Relic Chapel & Shrine
The Relic Chapel itself is beautiful, filled with history, stained glass, and detailed craftsmanship that makes you want to take your time and quietly look around. Whether you are interested in Catholic history, architecture, or simply visiting peaceful places in Ohio, the chapel leaves a lasting impression.
The Maria Stein Shrine of the Holy Relics is situated on nearly thirty acres of beautifully landscaped, peaceful rolling grounds in rural Ohio. The grounds offer many unique opportunities for prayer, reflection, and spending time immersed in a serene environment.
The 1,400 sq. ft. Heritage Museum re-opened in June 2015, following an extensive renovation, creating six distinct galleries designed to interpret the early settlement of southern Auglaize and Mercer counties in Ohio. Settlers to this area were largely of German descent and of the Roman Catholic faith.
In 1979 at the Maria Stein convent, a crucifix fell on the floor and broke into pieces. The Sisters were surprised to find it hollow and made of papier-maché. The broken crucifix had been made by Sisters of the Precious Blood using a German-language newspaper from Cincinnati, Ohio dated 1859.
The Little Chapel in the Woods was once a working structure where the Sisters produced syrup and molasses. By the 1960s, as its original agricultural purpose was no longer needed, it was lovingly transformed into a small chapel.
Today, the altar features a depiction of Our Lady of Lourdes appearing to Saint Bernadette. The front relief shows angels freeing souls from Purgatory, adding a powerful sense of hope and redemption to the space.
Stop by the Brunner Bake Shop
Another hidden gem inside the Shrine is the Brunner Bake Shop located on the third floor. The bakery offers fresh pastries, breads, coffee, and tea, including the well-known Brunner Bread once made by the Sisters at the Shrine.
It is the perfect stop before heading out to explore the grounds or after spending time walking the paths and prayer areas. Just make sure to check the bakery hours before your visit. They are open Wednesdays, Fridays and Saturdays.
Walking the Retreat House Grounds
One thing many visitors do not expect is how much there is to explore outside the chapel itself. Aside the relic chapel is the Spiritual Center just northwest of the shrine. The retreat house grounds stretch across 87 acres and are honestly one of the most relaxing parts of the visit.
There are walking paths winding through the property, peaceful patio areas, outdoor fire pits, prayer walkways, and outdoor Stations of the Cross tucked throughout the grounds. It is the kind of place where you naturally slow your pace and just enjoy being outside.
The Prayer Island and pond area are especially beautiful. A 40 foot cross overlooks the water and creates one of the most scenic and peaceful spots on the property. Whether you are there for prayer, reflection, photography, or simply a quiet walk, it is hard not to feel relaxed there.
